If you read this entire Psalm, you would find that it is David's cry for God's intervention. He is literally pouring his heart out to God and letting Him know that there are no real Godly people in his life. The ones who claimed to be, actually told lies and gossiped. You can really hear David's heart here, and get a sense of what he was going through. David was feeling alone. Living for God in a deceitful world can be a difficult and lonely battle. At one time, the great prophet Elijah felt so lonely that he wanted to die. But God told him that there were 7,000 other faithful men that he just wasn't aware of. I have gone through periods of time in my life where I felt exactly as David did. I can identify with David. We often believe that much of the suffering that we face in this life comes at the hand of the world..the non-believers..but unfortunately for many of us, the greatest battles we have faced, the most painful trials that have come our way, have been at the hands of Christians. Many of the cruelest words that have been spoken to me have come from God's people. It seems that things have not changed that much since David's day.
I love the fact that in the middle of David's prayer..in the middle of him pouring his heart out to God..at his point of despair...God speaks. It is amazing to me that God cares. He cared what David was dealing with..and He cares what each of us deal with. He cares when we are hurt. He cares when we have been dealt a major blow. He cares when our hearts are broken. He told David that He has seen the oppression of the poor..I don't know that God was necessarily talking here about just the physically poor. I believe that He was talking about the spiritually poor..those who have been oppressed, pushed down by others. He went on to say that He sees the sighing of the needy. He knows when our need for his intervention has come to the point where we are physically weak. I love what God says next. He told David.."NOW, I will arise. I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him."
I looked up that word "puffeth". It means to malign. I didn't know what that meant either, so I looked it up. The word "malign" means malicious, evil, spiteful, being evily disposed of, harmful, and the one that stood out most to me..likely to prove fatal. Beloved, this is precious! God knows the motives of the heart. When you have been crushed by someone in your life, God not only understands, but He promises to set you in safety from that person..from him who might even come across as if they were trying to "help" you, or "do good" for you..but their underlying motive is actually not good. It might be evil, or even spiteful. God says that for the blow you received from someone that was intended to be fatal, He will bring you into safety..and He says He will do it NOW.
When you have been cut down by someone's words, when you have felt as if you were mortally wounded, cry out to God. He will hear your cries. You may not see Him working in the situation, because God works in the hearts of men, but He promises that NOW, He will work in the situation. Today, if there are hurts in your heart, that are fresh hurts, or even old wounds, spend some time seeking the Lord...and trust Him to work in your situation. The words of the Lord are pure...and He will certainly keep His word and work on your behalf.
