When I think of an anchor, for some reason, I get a picture in my mind of a large ship or vessel, being held in place by something probably less than 1% of it's size..the anchor keeps the boat in place and keeps it from drifting. It keeps the ship securely in place, so that no storm can drag it off into unknown waters. It keeps the boat from being turned in every direction, or even from capsizing. The anchor is weighty, and when put into the water, it goes all the way into the depths of the water to secure not only the ship, but the lives of the people who are on the ship.
There are times when I write to all of you that I really need to hear the message myself. Today is such a day. Today is a day when I must stand firm in what I believe and in the hope that we have in Christ. People may disappoint us..but Jesus never will. We may face rejection in this life..but so did Jesus. We may be talked about, lied about, or even misunderstood..but Jesus is saying here..that the hope that He offers is an anchor to our very soul. Our soul involves our mind and emotions. Beloved, when you are troubled, I urge you to open your Bible, and read verses like the one we are talking about today..even memorize them. Then, when trouble comes, you will have something on which to stand. Your emotions wont be able to control you. Because you have used your anchor, you will not be tossed about from the storm that is in your life.
Hebrews 6:19 says that when we cling to God, we are actually transported..into His presence..behind the veil..and into the Holy of Holies. Jesus is our hope. He is our anchor. He is both sure and steadfast. The veil referred to in the verse hung across the entrance from the Holy Place in the temple to the Holy of Holies, which were the two innermost chambers of the Temple. This curtain prevented anyone from entering into, or even gazing in the interior of the Holy of Holies. The high priest could enter the Holy of Holies only once a year to stand before God's presence and atone for the sins of the entire nation. But Christ is our High Priest..and we can stand in the presence of God behind the veil..in the Holy of Holies because Jesus was our forerunner. He went before us and made a way for us to be in the presence of the Almighty..so that when we are standing in the midst of those troubled waters, we have an anchor..who will hold us up, and keep us from sinking. He will keep us from being tossed about. He is Christ..and on Christ, the solid rock we stand..ALL other ground is sinking sand!
Today, as you face your day, I urge you to think on this verse..to remember that Jesus is our hope..that just as the anchor goes all the way down into the depths of the water to secure the vessel, The Lord..literally went all the way down into the depth of the earth to secure each of you..His vessels. Anything that you face today, you do not have to face alone. May the God of hope fill every one of you today with all joy and peace in believing that he may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost.
