When someone gives you a gift, I like to believe that usually they have spent time thinking about you, and about what kinds of things you like or need. When you receive a gift, even if that gift doesn't turn out to be something you're really fond of, most people are gracious and thankful to the gift giver. God is our gift giver..He has given us the gift of salvation..and for us to simply receive that gift and be thankful for it..is something that I believe would greatly please the heart of God. He put all that He had into that gift. He gave up His Son..
Your relationship with God is based upon what Jesus has done, not what you have done, do now, or will do in the future...and what Jesus has done is already DONE. He said on the cross, "It is finished"..Our salvation is solely based upon what Jesus did on the cross. You may make mistakes in your life, but the blood of Christ covers your life. It covers not only the mistakes themselves, but it covers your guilt...your shame..you don't ever have to carry those things when you are a child of God. You may be imperfect, but Christ was and IS perfect. All that God offers to us is based upon His plan that has already been fulfilled through Christ. We do not need to add anything to His plan. We don't have to "work" our way to heaven. Christ is the Way.
The appropriate response to a gift, is to simply receive it, and say "thank you". Receive His gift with your faith. Be assured today of His love for you. Be assured of your salvation, and of the right and wonderful relationship that He longs to have with you!
