Do all of you know what a wedge is shaped like? It is kind of like a triangle..with a long sharp tip on one end..In the spiritual realm, it is possible for wrong thoughts to come in, or even wrong teaching about the Lord. These wrong things can enter our minds like a wedge would be used to split wood. A wedge with a very sharp point is driven into a piece of wood where it is weak, and then pushed in further and further, causing the wood to split. When there is a weak spot in our thinking, a wrong thought can make it's way in..and then as it pushes it's way into our life, it gets wider and wider. Pretty soon, we are totally off track in how we look at something.
So many people..believers..seem confused in this day and age about what they believe. Many don't really know what they believe. Maybe they did at one time, but now they have become confused by the wedge of unbelief that has made their way into their life and into their mind. We watch a news report or read a newspaper, and it is hard to imagine that God is still in control. It is hard to believe that God still cares..that He is concerned about what is happening in the world..that He sees the economy..or the swine flu..or the personal situations that we all go through.
I want to really encourage all of you..that no matter what is happening in your world..no matter what is going on around you..God can be trusted. People may disappoint us. They may break the trust that we have placed in them, breaking our spirits as well..but David in this Psalm, was telling God, that no matter what was going on, he was making a decision to stand on what he knew and believed about God. He would stand on the word of God and on His promises. He would stand on the fact that he knew God loved him. He didn't look to other sources for his hope or inspiration. He looked to God..and he asked God to keep confusion out of his life.
We can do the same thing. It is God alone who can fill our hearts with joy. It is Him who will take us through the most difficult circumstances, and give us the strength to get through. It is Him who in a hopeless situation will bring hope. It is God who brings peace to our hearts when everything around us is chaotic. It is God who will carry us when we can't carry ourselves.
Like the psalmist, I want to keep my eyes, my mind, and my heart fixed on God. I don't want to look to the left or to the right. I want my hope to continually be in Him. My prayer for all of us today is that we would encourage ourselves daily in the Lord, thereby staying strong..so that when that wedge of unbelief or untruth tries to make it's way in through some weakness in us, we will be able to recognize and disregard whatever is not of Him.
